The Secret to Overcoming Shame

The Secret to Overcoming Shame

Does your heart ever flutter and sink at the same moment?

When I receive a genuine compliment, all too often that’s the response I have. My soul leaps for joy from their love, but a small voice tries to suppress it and tell me I’m not worthy of such high remarks.

“You are a good and faithful servant!” one of my dearest friends, a godly woman I look up to, told me as I shared my mission trip photos.

If she only knew of all the struggles I’ve gone through before and after that picture was taken.

There seemed to be more days than not that I would beat myself up for not putting Christ first and others above me.

Surely she would take back that compliment if she knew how little I was getting into the word that week.

How to Spend Time in God’s Word (even when you’re way too busy)

You know you should read your Bible daily. But if you’re anything like me, some days are packed way too full with a demanding to-do list, crazy workload, and a pile of laundry to fold that’s been sitting for a day or two.

Is Reading the Bible Daily Worth It?

Is Reading the Bible Daily Worth It?

I didn’t realize it, but the simple goal I set in the spring of 2015 completely changed my life. I told my now-husband, Silas, that I was contemplating reading the Bible, cover-to-cover. “Well, let’s start reading Genesis chapter one” he replied. I assumed that was the beginning, but admittedly I wasn’t certain. I still didn’t have a clue what the numbers indicated before and after the colons when people quoted the Bible! (I could only look up verses thanks to Google, I had no idea how to use that nifty little “chapter: verse number” system.)

How I wish I could hug you and let you cry in my arms. I would tell you how precious and beautiful you are, but you might not let my voice overpower the seemingly stronger one in your head. I know, because I’ve been there. I know, because some days, I’m still there. But something has changed in my life – something that makes smashing that evil voice in my mind possible.

What to Do When Your Plans are Exhausting You

Anxiety slowly choked me out as my brain fumbled to process all of the possibilities. I ranted to my best friend over the phone, frantically explaining all of the uncertainties that fogged my mind and panicked my soul. I didn’t know what to do, I felt completely and utterly lost.

Contentment in Singleness: Love Has Already Found You

To be honest, I struggled big-time with contentment in my singleness before my husband and I tied the knot earlier this year. I longed for the days I would be married already. I just wanted that covenantal, exclusive, never-ending love with Silas that marriage promised me. I wasn’t going to be happy until I had it for myself.

How to be Biblically Authentic: 4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Commenting “Me Too”

This culture of demanding people to share more of the depths of their hearts opens up a whole new door for shame and brokenness to fester . . . And I believe that’s probably the reason why it’s not quite the biblical thing to do.

What if We Were More Concerned with GIVING (than receiving) Love

What if We Were More Concerned with GIVING (than receiving) Love

It turns out I don’t receive love very well when I make that my ultimate goal. When I’m centered around my needs, and not focused on making my husband feel loved, then I’m using all of my energy to express and build up expectations (that will fail me).
